weekly figures

Drawing sessions on Tuesdays in the city. It's funny, sometimes I think I'm afraid to leave a comfort zone. That's probably true but what's equally true is that there's tons to learn and there's always room to get better... and something about figure drawing being the foundation of artist training blah blah blah. Sometimes I wonder why I'm doing figure drawing at all, and whether it has any relation to what art I want to make, or plan to make. I guess I just want to have structure and studying the body gives me that; I know when I'm doing something wrong and I know when I'm on the right track. Doing things for the sake of doing them is a waste of time and this way I feel like I'm working toward something, like I'm learning a skill I can use. It also keeps me drawing and looking. learning too. It's getting easier to convey the model's mood by loosening up the neck. That was coming through last week in particular (it's kind of neat to surprise yourself like that). Now I really want to work on having more than just contours! I think that's the comfort zone I need to break out of (mission for tomorrow).

onward and upward.

PS. Can you tell that it's the same model as last time? They would switch her out more, she's doesn't really do energetic and exciting poses.

PPS. Every post I'm acutely aware that I'm addressing an invisible (and more often than not) non-existent reader. In my head I'm laughing at my own immodesty =) Plus, it'd be weirder still to write an entry and not address it to someone else as this writing is in a public space. SO yeah, i'm just going to assume for now... hahah

line shape value texture pattern positive negative space

Work to be confused and delighted by:
Franz Kline

Aleksandr Rodchenko

Naum Gabo

I knew who none of these people were 2 hours ago so please excuse the name-dropping. I'm still trying to memorize which name with which piece.

first lines, then shapes

starting from ground zero, playing with the wacom and trying to post before it gets too late in the week. So yeah ... i'm going back to the digital drawing board to try and get better aquainted with the basics. Using line by itself is sort of liberating but also kind of intimidating (abstract art scares me a little, but in a good way). but hey, i'm thinking about it too much ... silly or not, this was fun.

Exhibit A: the best christmas gift i've ever received.
Exhibit B: something i've been working on forever. it's the best Christmas present i've never given. It's going to happen though. For reals.

Bodies Galore

From Tuesday Feb 3rd, 09:

From last fall:

The model was very athletic and really pushed her poses. She made the session challenging but fun at the same time. Side note: I shot the photos at night which is why they images are esp. dark. They're on 18x24 newsprint so I didn't try to scan them.

Motown philly's back again...

I thought it'd be nice to post some time this year =) So hey, happy black history month everyone! A lot has happened since I last posted *ehermm* Gobama! *ehhem* that is very exciting. New jobs, new (used) cars, new presidents (ranging of course from the most exciting and news-worthy to least, respectively).

I miss following everyone's blogs so i'm excited to contribute again. I've been meaning to post these for months. Enjoy!
